Bargarh district, widely recognized as the “Rice Bowl of Odisha,” has in recent years encountered growing environmental and public health challenges due to prolonged chemical-intensive agriculture. Rising cases of severe health disorders, including cancer, have deeply impacted farming communities across the region.

In response to this critical situation, Shri Pushparanjan Sahoo, a progressive farmer from Sigida village, made a conscious and transformative shift towards organic and natural farming with the objective of safeguarding soil health, farm sustainability, and community well-being.

With regular guidance, capacity building, and technical support from Prakriti, he successfully transitioned his farm into a fully organic model by adopting indigenous seeds, composting methods, bio-inputs, and crop diversification practices. His farm now serves as a demonstration site, encouraging farmers from surrounding areas to witness the positive outcomes of sustainable agriculture.

To strengthen local organic marketing and encourage wider farmer participation, Shri Pushparanjan Sahoo has also initiated an “Organic Haat” twice every week, providing a direct platform for organic farmers to collectively market safe and chemical-free produce while promoting consumer awareness.

His committed efforts have inspired more than 50 farmers in Bargarh district to begin their own organic farming journey. Shri Pushparanjan Sahoo’s leadership reflects how one farmer’s vision can drive a meaningful transition towards healthier soil, healthier food, and a healthier future.
