Bargarh, widely known as the Rice Bowl of Odisha, is one of the state’s most agriculturally productive districts. Blessed with fertile soils and an extensive irrigation network, the district has immense potential to promote natural farming by integrating sustainable agricultural practices into its intensive farming systems.

District Challenge

The widespread adoption of chemical-intensive agriculture has resulted in low awareness of its long-term environmental and health impacts. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has contributed to soil degradation, declining ecological sustainability, and growing concerns over chronic health issues, including cancer among farming communities. Promoting natural farming has become essential for ensuring healthier ecosystems and sustainable livelihoods.

Our Approach

Prakriti promotes natural farming in Bargarh through a community-led approach, encouraging farmers to reduce dependence on chemical inputs and adopt sustainable agricultural practices. The initiative is supported by Champion Farmer Shri Pushparanjan Bhoi, along with experienced trainers Shri Azad Sahoo and Shri Sebaram Pradhan, who provide technical guidance, field demonstrations, and farmer training. Prakriti also facilitates Organic Haat, creating market opportunities for naturally grown produce while strengthening farmer awareness, capacity building, and community participation.
