Gajapati, located in the southern region of Odisha, is a predominantly tribal district known for its rich biodiversity, hilly landscapes, and rainfed agriculture. Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for most rural households, with farmers cultivating a variety of food and cash crops. The district holds immense potential for the promotion of natural farming through sustainable and community-driven agricultural practices.

District Challenge

The rapid expansion of chemical-intensive maize cultivation has emerged as a major challenge in Gajapati. Excessive use of synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides has led to soil nutrient imbalance, declining organic matter, and reduced soil microbial activity, making the transition to natural farming more challenging. Promoting sustainable alternatives to maize cultivation and restoring soil health remain key priorities for the district.

Our Approach

Prakriti promotes a community-based approach to natural farming by encouraging farmers to reduce their dependence on chemical-intensive maize cultivation and adopt diversified farming systems. The programme is supported by two Master Trainers, Shri Ajib Lochan Raita and Shri Pramod Kumar Nayak, who provide continuous technical guidance, field demonstrations, and hands-on training. Farmers are trained in multi-cropping, crop diversification, bio-input preparation, soil health management, and sustainable farming practices while exploring viable alternatives to maize cultivation.
